Scarless robot-assisted thyroid surgery in Morocco
Thyroid surgery is experiencing a true revolution thanks to technological advances in robot-assisted surgery.
Today, it is possible to perform a thyroidectomy (partial or total removal of the thyroid) without leaving a visible scar on the neck, offering patients an incomparable aesthetic result while guaranteeing optimal surgical precision.
In Morocco, our ENT center is a pioneer in this innovative technique, allowing patients to benefit from a minimally invasive, safe, and effective procedure, taking advantage of the latest robotic technologies.
The classic technique via cervicotomy (incision at the neck level) remains the standard approach for thyroid and parathyroid surgery. The resulting scar can be more or less visible depending on skin types and healing quality. Additionally, the incision at this specific location on the body can be distressing for some patients.
It is with the goal of reducing scarring and psychological impact that remote approaches have been developed, particularly at the axillary fossa level, performing the procedure using a surgical robot.
This technique was first described and then widely used in Korea by Professor WY CHUNG. Dr. CHEKKOURY was trained by Dr. Patrick AIDAN, former Head of Department at the American Hospital of Paris, a pioneer of this technique in Europe with more than 1,500 cases. Robot-assisted thyroid surgery is a technique that allows removal of all or part of the thyroid gland without an incision on the neck. Thanks to a high-precision surgical robot, the surgeon performs the operation through concealed incisions, usually under the armpit, making the scar invisible. This approach is based on three pillars:
- Extreme precision: the robot allows finer movements than the human hand
- High-definition 3D vision: offering an expanded field of view
- Low tissue trauma: promoting rapid recovery
- Benign thyroid nodules.
- Multinodular goiter.
- Certain thyroid cancers at an early stage.
- Patients with no history of neck surgery.
- Recognized expertise in robotic surgery.
- State-of-the-art technical platform.
- International experience in thyroid pathologies.
- Personalized approach for each patient.
- Complete support before, during, and after the operation.
The advantages of scarless thyroid surgery
Optimal aesthetic result
Increased precision and safety

Psychological comfort
Procedure and post-operative course
The procedure takes place during a short hospitalization, generally between 24 and 48 hours. The post-operative course is marked by moderate pain, easily controlled with simple pain medication. Resumption of eating and speaking is rapid, allowing the patient to return to daily comfort without prolonged delay.
The scar is completely invisible once the axillary wound has healed, which guarantees an optimal aesthetic result. Finally, regular follow-up is provided to adjust hormonal treatment if necessary and to support each patient in a personalized manner.
Potential complications are rare and are generally the same as in traditional cervical surgery:
- Temporary or permanent injury to the recurrent nerve (voice disorder).
- Temporary hypocalcemia (low calcium).
- Post-operative hematoma.
- Rare infection.
An experienced ENT surgeon significantly minimizes these risks.
Pre-operative consultation
- Hormonal testing and possible fine needle aspiration.
- Discussion of the technique, risks, and benefits.
Anesthesia
Surgical approach
Robotic assistance
- Complete control by the surgeon from a console.
